An ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning system) holds the operational truth of a company in one place: what was ordered, what is in stock, what was invoiced, what was paid. Its purpose is that every department reads the same numbers.
What an ERP is for
Before an ERP, each function keeps its own records. Sales tracks orders in a spreadsheet, the warehouse tracks stock in another, finance tracks invoices in the accounting package, and the three disagree by Thursday. Everyone is working from a partial and slightly wrong picture.
An ERP consolidates those records so there is one version. When a sale is entered, inventory drops, an invoice is generated, and the financial position updates, without anyone re-entering anything. The value is not the software; it is that four departments finally read the same number at the same time.

Does a smaller business need one?
Not necessarily, and it is worth resisting the assumption that growth automatically requires one.
The signals that suggest yes: the same data being keyed into multiple systems daily, nobody able to answer a basic question about stock or margin without assembling a spreadsheet, month-end taking longer each period, and decisions being made on numbers people privately do not trust.
The signals that suggest not yet: a single core workflow that a well-integrated set of specialized tools handles cleanly, or a business whose processes are still changing quickly enough that an ERP would freeze arrangements that are not settled.
